About Peru

Peru can be found in South America and proudly boasts an amazing landscape and rich history.  It is located off the Pacific Ocean and is flanked by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia and Chile. Quite a large country, (roughly two-thirds the size of Mexico), Peru has a population of more than 28 million, with almost a third of the people living in the nation’s capital of Lima.

Peru is also home to the world famous Andes mountains and because of their presence, Peru’s climate is far more variable than some of its neighbors. Almost 60 per cent of the country is Amazon rainforest, which is home to more than 20,000 plant and animal species, many of which are unique to Peru.

Peru’s history is a magnificent and colorful tapestry, and its early civilizations include some of the oldest known to man, notably the Norte Chico as well as the Inca Empire.

A developing country, with most people speaking Spanish, Peru is an exciting and vibrant nation, brimming with a diverse culture and people.

From a business perspective, Peru continues to enjoy an impressive economic boom, and is flourishing under a stable and democratic government.  A presidential republic (with President Allan Garcia Perez at the helm), Peru is a country fully committed to furthering its growth through favorable pro-trade agreements with the US and its neighboring South American counterparts.

With a GDP (2007) of $207 billion and an annual growth rate of 8.0%, Peru has vast and rich natural resources, including iron ore, copper, gold, silver, zinc, lead, fish, petroleum, natural gas, and forestry.
